Lake Conroe Fishing Report: Bite Updates & Tips

Lake Conroe bite intelligence • August 25, 2026

Find the bait, find the structure, then make your Lake Conroe cast

Lake Conroe remains in a late-summer pattern with warm water, healthy reservoir elevation and quality bass still showing in local tournament results. The practical move now is to use the low-light windows first, then shift toward offshore cover, bait concentrations and vertical structure as the sun rises.

What deserves your fishing time first

QUALITY FISH PRESENT

Largemouth bass

Current summer reports continue to favor brush piles, creek-channel ledges, submerged timber and other deeper cover after the low-light bite.

Recent quality signal: 7.90-lb tournament big bass on Aug. 23.

HIGH-CONFIDENCE FISHERY

Channel catfish

TPWD describes channel catfish as the most abundant catfish species in Lake Conroe and says they can be caught year-round.

Start with cut shad, prepared bait or drifting natural bait along useful depth transitions.

STRUCTURE TARGET

Crappie

Summer crappie should be treated as a structure-search problem. Scan brush, artificial habitat and vertical cover before fishing.

A June local guide report found fish in 15–25 feet on minnows; use that as a clue, not a permanent depth rule.

FOLLOW THE BAIT

Sunshine / hybrid bass

Open-water bait and schooling activity matter more than staying on a fixed waypoint.

TPWD stocked another 206,659 Sunshine Bass fingerlings in 2026.

OPPORTUNISTIC

White bass

Search for concentrated bait, birds or surface activity; hybrids can sometimes be mixed beneath white-bass schools.

Latest reservoir snapshot

Lake Conroe is holding close to conservation pool

Mean level 200.16 ft
Conservation pool 201 ft
Difference −0.84 ft
Surface area 19,440 ac

Conservation storage in the latest state dataset was about 401,057 acre-feet versus a listed conservation capacity of 417,577 acre-feet.

Fishing interpretation: a lake less than one foot below conservation pool leaves most normal structural zones in play. It does not guarantee fish location. Wind, bait movement, shade, current, temperature and oxygen still determine whether a particular piece of structure is worth fishing.
Late-summer timing

Let the sun tell you when to change depth

First light

Start where shallow feeding and deep-water access meet: dock edges, points, shade transitions or other cover near a drop.

First 2 hours

August local reports consistently identify this as a key bass window. Use moving baits while fish are willing to chase.

Late morning

Scan brush, ledges, channel bends, timber and habitat reefs. Electronics become more valuable than casting frequency.

Midday heat

Consider crappie, hybrids or catfish instead of forcing an unproductive shallow bass pattern.

Late evening

Revisit feeding areas as light falls and bait becomes more active around usable structure.

Read the lake before fishing it

Upper Lake Conroe and lower Lake Conroe are not the same fishing environment

Upper reservoir

TPWD notes that standing timber remains along portions of the river channel in the upper reaches.

  • More navigation caution around submerged timber
  • West Fork / river-channel influence
  • Sam Houston National Forest borders much of the upper third
  • Native vegetation restoration has historically included the Caney Creek arm

Lower reservoir

TPWD describes the lower two-thirds as more open-water oriented, with bulkheads and boat docks dominating developed shorelines.

  • Boat docks and shade become obvious bass targets
  • Open-water searching matters for hybrids and white bass
  • Offshore structure can matter more than visible shoreline cover in summer
  • Much shoreline is privately developed — do not assume public bank access
Navigation warning: TPWD says much of the standing timber in the upper reaches is slightly submerged when Lake Conroe is near conservation pool. Slow down when moving through unfamiliar timbered water.

What TPWD’s fisheries survey tells you about Lake Conroe

These figures are not a 2026 bite report. They describe the underlying fishery based on TPWD’s June 2021–May 2022 angler survey and biological sampling.

What anglers were targeting

Bass

Catfish
27%
Crappie
14%
Temperate bass

How anglers were accessing the fishery

Boat anglers 81%

TPWD 2021–22 creel survey.

Bass effort 168,095 h
Crappie effort 60,651 h
Temperate bass effort 12,658 h
Practical interpretation: Lake Conroe is not simply “a bass lake.” Bass dominate angler attention, but catfish and crappie are substantial fisheries and can be better fallback targets when the summer bass window closes.
Trophy-bass evidence

Lake Conroe has more than a reputation — TPWD data supports its big-bass potential

Lake record 15.93 lb

Recent Stow-A-Way tournament result.

Aug. 23 five-fish bag 25.54 lb

Useful quality signal, not a lake-wide catch-rate estimate.

TPWD’s survey also reported 18,991 tournament and 149,105 non-tournament bass-fishing hours during the 2021–22 creel period.

2026 TPWD stocking update

Lake Conroe received major bass stockings again in 2026

Sunshine Bass 206,659 fingerlings

Sunshine Bass are hybrid striped bass. TPWD’s management report explains that the hybrid fishery depends on continued stocking because it cannot sustain itself naturally.

Lone Star Bass 113,746 fingerlings

TPWD uses the Lone Star Bass designation for second-generation offspring from pure Florida-strain ShareLunker largemouth bass with proven trophy-growth genetics.

Recent Black Crappie supplementation 4,000 adults in 2024

TPWD’s stocking history also records 4,000 adult Black Crappie in 2022 and 4,000 in 2021.

What stocking does not mean: newly stocked fish do not create an instant hot bite at one waypoint. Stocking information explains how TPWD supports the long-term fishery; current bait, water conditions and habitat still determine today’s catch.
Fish-attractor strategy

Use TPWD’s habitat coordinates as a search grid — not a guaranteed honey hole

TPWD’s 2022 management report documented large fish-attractor structures deployed at 14 sites. The current Lake Conroe page also directs anglers to the statewide Habitat Structure Viewer and downloadable GPS files.

  1. Open TPWD’s Habitat Structure Viewer.
  2. Filter to Lake Conroe.
  3. Save several nearby structures rather than one waypoint.
  4. Idle across each site with sonar before casting.
  5. Look for bait plus fish marks, not structure alone.
  6. Fish the edge, top and down-current/down-wind side before leaving.
Vegetation context

Do not plan Lake Conroe like a wall-to-wall grass reservoir

Historical survey detail

TPWD’s management report documented 1,302 acres of native aquatic vegetation in 2021, up from 204 acres during the previous report period.

Current TPWD description

TPWD’s current Lake Conroe information page describes overall aquatic vegetation as low density and says plants do not currently occur at nuisance levels.

Fishing takeaway: treat vegetation as a localized piece of cover rather than assuming every shoreline has productive grass. In summer, brush, timber, channels, docks, reefs and bait can be more dependable search targets.
Why shad patterns work

Lake Conroe’s prey base explains the bait-first summer strategy

Threadfin shad

Dominant prey species in TPWD’s 2021 electrofishing survey.

Gizzard shad

Important forage including individuals large enough to interest larger predators.

Bluegill

Abundant prey and also a quality target fishery.

Longear sunfish

Another major prey component identified by TPWD sampling.

Practical lure decision: when sonar shows shad, start with a presentation that matches the size/depth of that bait. If you see no bait and no fish, changing lure color ten times is usually less useful than moving.
Species-by-species plan

Where to start, what to throw and when to leave

Target Starting zone Useful presentation Move when…
Largemouth bass Low light: docks/points/feeding cover. Later: brush, ledges, timber, deeper structure. Shad imitation early; soft plastics, jigs and deeper presentations later. The structure has no bait or bass marks and repeated angle changes produce nothing.
Crappie Brush, habitat structures, vertical cover and suspended schools. Minnows or small jigs; vertical control is often more important than color. Sonar confirms the brush but not the fish.
Channel catfish Channel edges, baited holes, wind-influenced flats or areas holding natural forage. Cut shad, natural bait or prepared catfish bait. A baited area has had enough soak time with no indication of feeding fish.
Blue catfish Deeper edges, channels and areas where mobile forage is concentrated. Fresh cut bait; drifting can cover more water. Electronics show no bait or bottom-oriented fish.
Hybrid / Sunshine Bass Open water, channel zones and below active white-bass schools. Slabs, spoons, trolling or live shad. The bait school leaves — follow it rather than defending a waypoint.
White bass Schooling activity and concentrations of shad. Spoons, slabs and compact shad profiles. Surface/sonar activity disappears.
Bluegill Riprap and deeper water around the toe of the slope. Worms, crickets or sinking insect patterns. Only tiny bait-stealers are contacting the bait.
Decision plan

A practical Lake Conroe morning from launch to last cast

1 Launch early

Be on your first piece of water before the strongest low-light period disappears.

2 Find active bait

Use surface activity, birds and electronics to avoid fishing dead water.

3 Fish shallow-to-mid depth first

Give bass a chance to show themselves while light levels are lower.

4 Go offshore

Scan multiple structures and fish only the ones containing bait or target fish.

5 Change species if needed

A weak midday bass bite can become a good crappie or catfish session.

Boat vs bank

Which approach makes more sense on Lake Conroe?

Boat angler

  • Best access to offshore brush, reefs and channel structure
  • Easier to follow moving hybrid/white-bass schools
  • Can fish multiple lake zones as light and wind change
  • Must manage timber/navigation and zebra-mussel drain rules

Bank angler

  • Can target accessible riprap, pier/shore structure and catfish
  • Should verify legal public access before arrival
  • Much of the lower shoreline is privately developed
  • Long casts are less useful than choosing shoreline near depth, cover or bait
TPWD’s 2021–22 creel survey recorded approximately 81% boat anglers and 19% bank anglers. That is historical usage data, not a rule saying shore fishing is poor.

Current keeper rules

Lake Conroe size & bag limits

TPWD lists special regulation for Lake Conroe largemouth bass. Other listed species follow the limits shown on TPWD’s current Lake Conroe regulation page.

Species Length Daily bag Key detail
Largemouth bass 16″ minimum 5 black bass combined Lake Conroe-specific largemouth minimum.
Smallmouth bass 14″ minimum Included in 5-black-bass bag All black bass count together.
Alabama / spotted bass No minimum listed Included in 5-black-bass bag Correct identification matters.
Blue + channel catfish No minimum 25 combined No more than 5 may be 20″+, and no more than 1 of those may be 30″+.
Flathead catfish 18″ minimum 5 Separate from blue/channel aggregate.
Crappie 10″ minimum 25 combined White, black, hybrids and subspecies combined.
White bass 10″ minimum 25 Current TPWD Conroe listing.
Striped + hybrid striped bass 18″ minimum 5 combined Juvenile hybrid/white-bass identification can cause mistakes.
Alligator gar Any size 1 Public-water harvest generally must be reported to TPWD within 24 hours.
Grass carp Do not retain Lake Conroe Triploid Grass Carp Permit requires immediate unharmed release.
Measure the largemouth before putting it in the livewell. Lake Conroe’s current TPWD page lists a 16-inch largemouth minimum, which is easy to confuse with the ordinary statewide bass rule.
August 2026 license reminder

Fishing before and after September 1 crosses a Texas license-year boundary

Through August 31

Use a valid Texas freshwater fishing privilege for the current license year, unless you qualify for an exemption.

September 1 onward

Texas’s 2026–27 regulation year begins September 1. Confirm your license/endorsement is valid for the new year.

Before towing home

Drain Lake Conroe water before transport

TPWD posts a zebra-mussel alert for Lake Conroe. Texas requires draining water from boats and onboard receptacles when leaving or approaching public fresh water.

Livewell

Drain retained lake water.

Bilge

Remove water before transport.

Bait container

Follow Texas aquatic-invasive-species transport rules.

Hull / trailer

Inspect for attached plants or organisms.

When the bite stops

Diagnose the problem before changing every lure in the boat

Structure but no fish

Leave. A brush pile is only useful when forage or target fish are using it.

Bass marks but no bites

Change angle, speed and vertical position before abandoning the location.

Only small bass

Scan the closest deeper edge or isolated cover rather than repeating identical shallow targets.

Crappie left the waypoint

Search adjacent depth and secondary structure. Fish move; GPS coordinates do not.

Hybrids vanished

Search for the bait school again. Open-water fish can leave one location quickly.

Midday bass is inefficient

Switch to crappie or catfish and turn a slow bass day into a productive trip.

Lake Conroe FAQ

Lake Conroe fishing report questions

How is Lake Conroe fishing in late August 2026?

Recent local reporting still reflects a warm late-summer pattern. Water has recently been reported in the mid-80s, with bass relating to structure and bait and the best shallow opportunities concentrated around lower-light periods. The August 23 Stow-A-Way tournament produced a 7.90-pound big bass and a 25.54-pound five-fish weight, confirming that quality largemouth remain catchable.

What is the current Lake Conroe water level?

The latest Water Data for Texas information checked during this review lists Lake Conroe at 96.0% full with a mean water level of 200.16 feet, 0.84 feet below the 201-foot conservation pool.

Why is TPWD’s Lake Conroe fishing report dated February?

TPWD currently has weekly fishing reports on hold while it works on improving report quality and data collection. The latest official Lake Conroe weekly report displayed by TPWD is February 25, 2026.

Where should I fish for Lake Conroe bass in summer?

Use low-light periods to test feeding cover such as dock edges and points with nearby depth. After the sun rises, recent local reports and TPWD’s seasonal tactics support moving toward deeper brush, submerged timber, creek-channel structure and other offshore cover.

What depth should I fish for Lake Conroe crappie?

There is no single permanent depth. A June 2026 guide report found crappie in roughly 15–25 feet, but the more reliable approach is to scan brush or habitat structure and fish the depth where the school is actually holding.

Did TPWD stock Lake Conroe in 2026?

Yes. TPWD’s current stocking history lists 206,659 Sunshine Bass fingerlings and 113,746 Lone Star Bass fingerlings stocked in Lake Conroe during 2026.

What is the Lake Conroe largemouth bass size limit?

TPWD’s current Lake Conroe regulation page lists a 16-inch minimum length for largemouth bass. The daily bag for all black bass species is five in any combination.

What is the Lake Conroe crappie limit?

White and black crappie, including hybrids and subspecies, have a 10-inch minimum length and a daily bag of 25 in any combination.

What is the Lake Conroe hybrid striped bass limit?

Striped bass and hybrid striped bass have an 18-inch minimum length and a daily combined bag of five on Lake Conroe.

Can I keep a grass carp caught in Lake Conroe?

No. TPWD states that a Triploid Grass Carp Permit is in effect at Lake Conroe and any grass carp caught must be immediately returned to the water unharmed.

Where can I find Lake Conroe fish attractor coordinates?

TPWD’s Habitat Structure Viewer provides fish-habitat locations and lets anglers download structure data in formats including CSV, GPX and KML. TPWD’s fisheries report documented fish-attractor structures at 14 Lake Conroe sites.

Is Lake Conroe better from a boat or the bank?

A boat provides much better access to offshore structure and moving open-water fish, which is especially useful during summer. Bank fishing can still be productive where legal public access reaches riprap, catfish water or useful shoreline structure. TPWD’s 2021–22 creel survey recorded about 81% boat anglers and 19% bank anglers.

Lake Conroe bottom line

Your best summer lure is often your fish finder

Lake Conroe still has quality largemouth bass, a strong catfish fishery, productive crappie structure and a continuously stocked hybrid-bass fishery. But in late summer, the highest-value decision is usually not “Which lure color?” It is “Which piece of structure actually has bait and fish?”

Current-data review completed . Water levels, temperature, fishing pressure, ramp conditions and fish locations can change quickly.
