Why this guide does not pretend one June Lake acreage figure is certain
Published public-facing sources do not agree on June Lake’s surface-area figure. Mono County tourism describes the lake as around 320 acres, while a current Recreation.gov campground page describes it as 257 acres; third-party fishing databases publish still other figures.
CDFW’s June Lake rule without making you decode the booklet
In 2026, the last Saturday in April was April 25.
- Ordinary inland fishing uses one closely attended rod/line or hand line.
- The general rule allows no more than three hooks or three artificial lures on that line, subject to more restrictive special rules.
- A qualifying Second Rod Validation allows two rods in eligible inland waters.
- Anglers under age 16 may use up to two rods in qualifying inland waters under the statewide rule.
- Snagging is prohibited.
- Mono County prohibits night fishing except at Topaz Lake.
June Lake is not a legal middle-of-the-night trout stop
California defines “day” for this rule as one hour before sunrise through one hour after sunset. Mono County then prohibits night fishing in all county waters except Topaz Lake.
Sunrise and sunset change daily. Use the local June Lake time for the date you are actually fishing.

Trailered watercraft: inspection happens before June Lake
Mono County’s golden-mussel ordinance took effect April 9, 2026. Qualifying trailered watercraft must be inspected and cleared before launching in Mono County waters.
Remove water, vegetation and debris before reaching the inspection station.
Cleared boats receive the Eastern Sierra Mussel Sticker.
An accepted Mono/Inyo inspection can be used within the regional program for its applicable validity period.

SR 158 forms an approximately 14–15 mile scenic Loop connecting four major trout lakes. The sequence from the northern side is Grant → Silver → Gull → June.

- Wind: if afternoon wind is building, return toward the ramp before the crossing becomes difficult rather than after.
- Thunderstorms: leave exposed water when lightning threatens; fishing rods are not worth staying on the lake for.
- Cold water: mountain sunshine does not make sudden immersion harmless.
- High elevation: hydrate, use sun protection and expect stronger UV exposure than at low elevation.
- Bear country: use campground food-storage lockers where provided and keep a clean campsite.
- Offline plan: save your license, route, regulations and marina phone number before relying on mountain cellular coverage.

Yes under the regular 2026 season. CDFW lists June Lake as open from the last Saturday in April through November 15. The 2026 opener was April 25.
What is the 2026 trout limit at June Lake?
CDFW lists a daily bag and possession limit of five trout for June Lake.
Can I fish June Lake at night?
No. California’s freshwater regulations prohibit night fishing in Mono County waters except Topaz Lake. For this rule, day runs from one hour before sunrise through one hour after sunset.
Can I fish with two rods at June Lake?
