Rumsey is a stage reference—not the depth under your boat
Lake County defines Zero Rumsey as the historic natural low-water reference and 7.56 feet Rumsey as a defined “full lake.”
The most recent USGS reading available during this review was 3.53 feet on Aug. 24, which is 4.03 feet below that defined full-lake stage.
Clear Lake zones a first-time angler can actually use
Shallow tule/slough habitat. CDFW identifies Rodman Slough as an important breeding and nursery area for black bass, black and white crappie and catfish.

Largemouth Bass are Clear Lake’s headline sport fish. The lake also supports Black and White Crappie, Bluegill and other sunfish, catfish, bullheads, carp and native fishes.
What is the bass limit at Clear Lake in 2026?
California’s general lake/reservoir black-bass rule applies: five black bass per day with a 12-inch minimum total length, unless a later or more specific rule applies.
What is the crappie limit at Clear Lake?
The California rule provides a combined daily bag limit of 25 sunfish and crappie of all species. Clear Lake is not one of the waters listed with a special crappie minimum size.
Is there a catfish limit at Clear Lake?
Clear Lake falls under California’s general catfish rule, which places no general bag limit on catfish or bullheads there. Fish-consumption advice is separate and recommends much smaller weekly amounts for eating the catch.

The current State Parks page lists a boat ramp and boating access, but Clear Lake State Park is not part of Lake County’s maintained-ramp status table. Verify same-day launch conditions with State Parks, especially when water levels are falling.
Do I need a boat inspection before launching at Clear Lake?
Lake County requires screening and a current mussel sticker for covered registered/trailered watercraft. Visitor and resident screening currently costs $20. Certain small nonmotorized craft are excluded from screening.

How much is a Clear Lake fishing license in 2026?
California’s 2026 one-day fishing license is $21.09, the two-day license is $32.40, the 10-day nonresident license is $64.54, the resident 365-day license is $64.54 and the nonresident 365-day license is $174.14.
Can I fish Clear Lake with two rods?
California sells a Second Rod Validation, currently $20.26 in 2026, that allows qualifying anglers to use two rods or lines in qualifying inland waters. It does not override waters where only artificial lures or barbless hooks may be used or another special restriction applies.
Can women and children eat Clear Lake largemouth bass?
OEHHA currently advises women ages 18–49 and children ages 1–17 not to eat black bass from Clear Lake because of mercury. Women 50 and older and men 18 and older are advised to limit black bass to one serving per week.
