Fish Beaver by lake zone, depth & today’s conditions
Beaver Lake is too large and too deep for a generic list of “best fishing spots.” A useful trip starts by choosing the right end of the reservoir, checking the current pool and generation, then matching stripers, bass, crappie, walleye or catfish to the depth and structure they are actually using.

Separate today’s strongest evidence from last week’s location clue
Stripers
AGFC’s latest report calls stripers the best current option. The recommended approach is an extremely early launch— roughly 4:30 a.m.—with fish being caught before about 8 a.m.
Point 5 → dam
The most recent location-specific report placed stripers from Point 5 toward Beaver Dam. The Aug. 20 update continued to report a strong striper bite but did not repeat an exact location.
Summer pattern holding
Multiple July/August reports repeatedly emphasized deep-water structure, very early or late fishing, trolling for crappie and points/channel adjacency for several species.
What to target on a late-August Beaver trip
Striped bass
Launch extremely early. Recent reports repeatedly favor lower-lake water toward the dam.
Find bait/fish electronically before committing to a depth.
Walleye
Current AGFC starting depth is roughly 25–35 feet.
Current suggested presentations include crawler harnesses and drop-shot rigs.
Crappie
Trolling is currently more consistent than expecting every brush pile to hold a concentrated school.
Catfish
Start near main-channel drop-offs at roughly 30 feet.
Black bass
Recent August reporting placed bass on points around 20–25 feet during the better early/late periods.
“20 cfs now” can become roughly 7,800 cfs during generation
The Aug. 23 USACE snapshot listed only 20 cfs of total outflow. But recent hourly data show why tailwater anglers must not treat a snapshot as the day’s schedule.
On Aug. 21, releases climbed from hundreds of cfs to roughly 7,800 cfs during hydropower generation before dropping again.
Beaver Lake access by fishing zone
Simplified orientation only. Beaver’s branching shoreline requires a proper navigation chart/GPS for actual boat navigation.

Stop searching Beaver Lake for brush from scratch
AGFC publishes Beaver Lake fish-attractor files that can be loaded into compatible Lowrance, Humminbird and GPX-capable devices. That turns “fish some brush” into actual GPS-searchable habitat.
AGFC documented 145 new Beaver Lake fish-attractor locations in a major habitat project publicized in 2022.
Another project added 119 habitat sites: 55 around Hickory Creek/Monte Ne and 64 in Indian Creek/Dam Site Island areas.
Before leaving home
Download the current Beaver fish-attractor file from AGFC for your electronics/GPS format.
On the lake
Treat the waypoint as a search center. Use sonar to locate the actual structure and determine whether fish are on top, beside it or suspended above it.
In summer
Prioritize attractors whose usable depth intersects bait, fish marks and the productive water column rather than automatically choosing the deepest waypoint.
Depth is useful only when fish can comfortably use it
Beaver is a deep Ozark reservoir. AGFC’s seasonal reports repeatedly discuss the summer thermocline because fish can concentrate around a productive temperature/oxygen layer instead of occupying every foot of water beneath your boat.
That is especially useful when current reports place walleye around 25–35 feet and crappie are suspended.
Where should you start?
Point 5 → dam
Summer striper coreRepeated recent August reports place stripers in this lower-lake zone.
Do not spend the prime dawn window running random shoreline. Find bait and fish marks quickly.
Indian / Lost Bridge
Lower-lake structureDeep points, creek arms and habitat structures make this a useful transition around the dam-end fishery.
Rocky Branch
Mid-lake flexibilityA sensible base when walleye, crappie, bass and open-water fish are all possible targets.
Prairie / Horseshoe
Transition waterUseful for points, creek mouths and upper-to-mid-lake bass/crappie planning.
Hickory / War Eagle
River influenceUpper Beaver behaves more like a river-reservoir transition than the deep, clearer water near the dam.
Start each species differently
Striped bass
Current: very early; lower lake; recent location-specific pattern Point 5 toward dam.
Find bait before fishing an old waypoint.
Walleye
Current: 25–35 feet. Start around points or edges connected to deeper channel water.
Crappie
Current: scattered; trolling most consistent.
Official attractor waypoints are valuable after you establish the productive depth.
Black bass
Recent summer reports favor early/late fishing and points around the 20–25-foot band.
Catfish
Current starting zone is around 30 feet near main-channel drop-offs.
What to change when the first pattern fails
No bait on sonar?
Change location/depth before endlessly changing lure color. Gamefish rarely stay far from the food source for long.
Crappie waypoint empty?
Check above and beside the attractor, then move. A GPS waypoint marks habitat—not guaranteed fish.
Bass shoreline dead?
The lake is more than four feet below the summer target. Scan the first break or point outside the newly exposed bank.
Stripers disappear after dawn?
Current reporting warns that the strongest summer window can be short. Do not assume the same school will remain catchable in the same way all day.
Save these lake-specific limits
| Species | Minimum / special rule | Daily limit | Why anglers miss it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Largemouth bass | 15″ minimum | Within 6 black bass combined | Beaver special regulation is more restrictive than simply using a generic Arkansas black-bass rule. |
| Smallmouth bass | 15″ minimum | Within 6 combined | Species identification matters. |
| Spotted bass | Current Beaver special listing does not apply the 15″ largemouth/smallmouth minimum. | Within 6 combined | Do not automatically measure every black bass against the same minimum. |
| Black + white crappie | 10″ minimum | 15 combined | Beaver’s 15-fish limit is lower than Arkansas’ generic crappie limit. |
| Walleye | 18″ minimum | 4 | Applies to Beaver Lake and covered tributaries. |
| Striped bass | 20″ minimum | 3 striped + hybrid combined | Striper length rule plus combined temperate-bass bag must both be checked. |
| Hybrid striped bass | Check current species rule | 3 striped + hybrid combined | Shares the combined Beaver daily bag. |
| White bass | — | No Beaver-specific daily limit | Beaver Lake and tributaries have a special white-bass provision. |
| Channel / blue / flathead catfish | Statewide provisions | 10 combined | Beaver is not one of the listed special catfish-limit waters. |
Arkansas eliminated separate fish possession limits
“Possession = 3× daily”
Older Arkansas guide pages and search results may still display the previous possession-limit framework.
Daily limits remain
Separate fish possession limits were eliminated July 1, 2026. Daily creel limits still control how many fish may be taken each day.
Correct license choices for a Beaver Lake trip
Anglers age 16 or older generally must carry a valid Arkansas fishing license to take or attempt to take aquatic wildlife unless a specific exemption applies.
Resident Fisheries Conservation License.
Beaver Lake and Beaver Tailwater should never share one rule table
Beaver Lake
Reservoir fishery for striped bass, black bass, crappie, walleye, white bass, catfish and other warmwater species.
Use Beaver Lake reservoir rules.
Beaver Tailwater
Cold-water trout fishery with separate trout-permit, harvest and generation-safety requirements.
A 4:30 a.m. launch makes boating-law preparation part of the fishing plan
A pre-dawn run requires proper vessel lighting so other boats can identify your presence and direction.
Carry an appropriate USCG-approved wearable PFD for every person aboard.
Arkansas requires children 12 and younger to wear a securely fastened USCG-approved PFD while aboard a vessel, subject to limited enclosed-area exceptions.
Operators born on or after Jan. 1, 1986 must satisfy Arkansas boater-education requirements when legally operating covered motorboats/sailboats.
25-mph wind is the Corps’ open-water red line
The official Beaver map says boaters should stay out of open water when winds of 25 mph or more are forecast or blowing.
Submerged/exposed points change with lake level, and not every hazard appears on the map.
Deep cold water, timber, snags and irregular shoreline create hazards beyond ordinary wave conditions.
Prairie Creek swim beach closure does not mean “Beaver Lake is closed”
Prairie Creek swim beach
USACE closed the designated swimming beach Aug. 18 because routine testing found higher-than-acceptable E. coli levels.
Fishing access
The official notice specifically addresses the swim beach. It does not announce closure of the entire reservoir, Prairie Creek park or Beaver Lake fishing.
Rocky / Lost Bridge South
Their campground swim beaches were permanently removed in 2025, while shoreline access remains available.
Five ways to fish Beaver without planning from zero
1. Summer striper
Lower-lake launch → legal pre-dawn lights → on water ≈4:30 → locate bait → Point 5/dam recent pattern → fish efficiently before bite slows.
2. Walleye
Mid/lower access → points near channel → scan 25–35 ft → crawler harness/drop-shot → move until a productive depth repeats.
3. Crappie
Load AGFC attractors → establish productive depth → troll while fish remain scattered → return to productive habitat when schools concentrate.
4. Bass
Early points → scan 20–25 ft recent pattern → account for 4+ ft drawdown → move from visible bank to first useful break when shallow cover is dry.
5. No-boat angler
Start with documented legal public access. Hickory Creek and Prairie Creek have published accessible fishing-pier options.
Upper White River above Beaver has a limited-entry paddlefish season
Eye-to-fork length.
AGFC’s current license page lists a limited-entry Paddlefish Trophy Tag for the White River above Beaver Lake, with up to two paddlefish under the permit framework. This is seasonal and is not an ordinary year-round Beaver Lake harvest privilege.
Beaver Lake pre-trip checklist
- Choose the reservoir zone first: lower lake, mid-lake or upper/rivers.
- Check today’s pool: the Aug. 23 benchmark was 1117.10 feet, 4.33 feet below summer conservation pool.
- Check live generation separately: a 20-cfs snapshot can change dramatically during hydropower operation.
- Check the newest AGFC report: late-summer depth and timing can change faster than permanent access information.
- Download AGFC attractor files: load Beaver habitat into your GPS/fishfinder before leaving home.
- Carry a measuring board: crappie, largemouth, smallmouth, walleye and striped bass have important length rules.
- Carry the correct Arkansas license: and a trout permit if fishing the regulated Beaver Tailwater.
- Prepare for a dark launch: current striper timing can put you on the water well before sunrise.
- Check wind: USACE’s map advises staying off open water at 25 mph or greater.
- Check recreation alerts separately: a swim-beach closure is not automatically a fishing or boat-ramp closure.

Practical questions before fishing Beaver Lake
What is the current Beaver Lake level?
The USACE current-conditions report used for this update listed Beaver at 1117.10 feet at noon on August 23, 2026. The summer conservation-pool target is 1121.43 feet, putting the reservoir about 4.33 feet below that target.
What is biting at Beaver Lake right now?
AGFC’s August 20 report identifies striped bass as the strongest current option, especially very early. Walleye were around 25–35 feet, crappie were scattered with trolling the most consistent method, and catfish were around 30-foot main-channel drop-offs.
Where are Beaver Lake stripers?
The August 20 report confirms a strong early-morning striper bite. The most recent location-specific report, dated August 13, repeatedly placed fish from Point 5 toward Beaver Dam. Treat that location as a recent pattern and verify bait/fish with electronics.
What time should I start striper fishing?
The current AGFC report recommends getting on the water around 4:30 a.m. and taking advantage of the bite before about 8 a.m. Proper navigation lights and boating-safety equipment are therefore especially important.
What depth are Beaver Lake walleye using?
The August 20 AGFC report places walleye roughly 25–35 feet deep and identifies crawler harnesses and drop-shot rigs as current options.
What is the Beaver Lake crappie limit?
Beaver Lake has a 15-fish combined daily crappie limit, and crappie shorter than 10 inches must be released.
What is the Beaver Lake walleye limit?
Walleye on Beaver Lake and covered tributaries must be at least 18 inches long, with a daily limit of four.
What is the striped bass limit?
Striped and hybrid striped bass share a combined Beaver Lake daily limit of three. Striped bass must be at least 20 inches long to keep.
Are there fish attractors in Beaver Lake?
Yes. AGFC publishes Beaver Lake attractor files for compatible Lowrance, Humminbird and GPX devices. Major habitat projects have added hundreds of documented habitat sites, including 119 locations added in a later project around Hickory Creek, Monte Ne, Indian Creek and Dam Site Island areas.
Where can I bank fish Beaver Lake?
Use legal public access rather than assuming every visible shoreline is public. Published Beaver regulations identify accessible fishing piers at Hickory Creek and Prairie Creek. Other Corps parks also provide shoreline access, but facilities vary.
Is Prairie Creek closed?
The designated Prairie Creek swim beach is currently closed because of elevated E. coli detected during routine testing. The official notice does not announce closure of the entire park, fishing access or Beaver Lake.
How much is Corps day use at Beaver Lake?
USACE currently lists $5 per carload for applicable day-use facilities and a $40 annual pass. Eligible campground guests are exempt from the applicable daily fee, and self-service kiosks accept cards rather than cash or checks.
What Arkansas fishing license should a visitor buy?
Current AGFC nonresident fishing choices include a $15 one-day license, a $30 three-day license valid for 72 hours from the specified start time, and a $60 annual license. A nonresident trout permit costs $20 when required for trout fishing.
Does Arkansas still have fish possession limits?
Separate fish possession limits were eliminated effective July 1, 2026. Daily creel limits still apply, so the change does not create unlimited daily harvest.
Is Beaver Tailwater the same as Beaver Lake?
No. Beaver Lake is the reservoir above the dam. Beaver Tailwater is the cold-water trout fishery below Beaver Dam and has separate trout-permit, harvest and generation-safety rules.
What is the current Beaver Tailwater trout limit?
Under the current emergency regulation, anglers may keep two trout daily in Beaver Tailwater and both must be shorter than 14 inches. Trout 14 inches or longer must be released immediately until further notice.
How quickly can Beaver Dam generation change?
Recent USACE hourly records demonstrate major variation. Low-flow periods around 20 cfs have been followed by hydropower releases near 7,800 cfs. Those numbers are examples, not a schedule. Always check live generation information before fishing below the dam.
When should I avoid Beaver Lake open water?
The official USACE Beaver Lake map advises boaters to stay out of open water when winds of 25 mph or more are forecast or blowing.
Zone first. Bait second. Depth third. Lure last.
Beaver rewards anglers who reduce the lake before they start fishing it. Pick the correct end of the reservoir, check the current pool and generation, use official habitat waypoints where helpful, then let sonar, bait and repeated bites tell you which depth deserves your time.
