Who Needs an Alberta Sportfishing Licence?
Alberta resident age 16–64

Alberta resident age 65+

Senior visiting Alberta
A visitor age 65 or older still needs the applicable Canadian or international visitor licence.
First Nations persons
A person defined as an Indian under the federal Indian Act is listed among Alberta’s sportfishing licence exemptions. Separate domestic, food-fishing or constitutionally protected harvesting rules can apply in other situations.

Create a WiN
Alberta may request a driver’s licence number, health-care card number or Canadian passport number to verify identity during the application.
The activated ten-digit WiN can then be used for future Alberta fishing and hunting transactions.
Recover or update your WiN
Use profile lookup or account recovery before creating a new account. AlbertaRELM stores licence purchases and other profile information under the existing WiN.
Update the address, phone number or email inside the existing profile.
- WiN activation is a one-time C$10 fee plus GST.
- An activated WiN does not expire.
- The same WiN is used for fishing and hunting.
- A physical WiN card is optional.
- Physical cards are not automatically mailed.
- An optional card costs C$3 plus GST.

Printed licence
A printed copy remains valid proof. Keep it dry, readable and available while fishing and when transporting fish harvested under the licence.
Prepare for phone failure
The angler is responsible for producing electronic or paper proof when requested. A dead battery or inaccessible account can create a field problem.

A Fishing Licence Does Not Tell You What You Can Keep
Buying the correct licence completes only the licensing step. Before fishing, search the exact waterbody and check each item below.
- Is the waterbody open on the fishing date?
- Is the target species currently open?
- What is the daily catch limit?
- What is the possession limit?
- Is there a minimum, maximum or slot size?
- Is bait allowed at that waterbody?
- Are there gear, hook or line restrictions?
- Is an advisory or emergency closure active?
When a Special Harvest Licence Is Also Required
A regular sportfishing licence does not automatically allow an angler to retain walleye at a lake managed through Alberta’s Special Harvest Licence program.
The C$12 licence is available only to eligible Alberta residents, is tied to a waterbody and size class, and requires pre-numbered Government of Alberta paper tags before an online purchase can be completed.
Alberta’s 2026 Licence-Free Fishing Weekends Have Passed
The official 2026 Family Fishing Weekends were February 14–16 and July 11–12. Both dates had passed by August 3, 2026.
Alberta normally holds one licence-free weekend over the February Family Day weekend and another during July. Wait for the Government of Alberta to publish the next official dates before planning a licence-free trip.
