Who is treated as a Nova Scotia resident?
The official application includes people who have lived in Nova Scotia for at least two months immediately before applying. It also lists certain people born in Nova Scotia who own real estate in the province, foreign diplomatic or consular officers stationed in Nova Scotia, and qualifying RCMP or Canadian Armed Forces members stationed or born in Nova Scotia.
When a Provincial Fishing Licence Is Not Required
Anglers Age 15 or Younger
No provincial General or Salmon Fishing Licence is required. Seasons, limits, gear rules and closed waters still apply.
Legally Constructed Private Ponds and U-Fish
The handbook lists a licence exemption for legally constructed private ponds and U-fish operations. Obtain the owner’s permission and confirm that the location genuinely qualifies.
Smelt or Gaspereau
No licence is required for recreational dip-netting of smelt or gaspereau, but seasons, closed days, locations and limits still apply.
2026 Sportfishing Weekends
The 2026 dates were February 14–16 and June 6–7. These dates have now passed. Atlantic salmon still required a Salmon licence, and all other rules remained in force.
