BC Tidal Fishing Licence: Choose, Buy and Use It Correctly
A DFO fishing license—officially the B.C. Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licence—is required for recreational finfish and shellfish harvesting in British Columbia’s tidal salt water. It is not the same as a provincial freshwater licence.
Use this guide to choose the right duration, calculate the current fee, add the salmon stamp, buy through NRLS, carry valid proof, check live area rules, record retained fish and complete mandatory iREC reporting.

Choose the Exact Licence Before Paying
Follow this route because DFO does not normally refund a purchased licence or change an incorrectly selected fishing year.
Pacific Ocean, saltwater inlet or tidal river section → DFO tidal licence. Non-tidal lake, river or stream → check the provincial freshwater system.
Under 16 → free annual juvenile licence. Age 16–64 → adult product. Age 65+ → Canadian residents can use the reduced annual senior product; short-term products use the regular age-16+ fee.
A Canadian resident normally lives in Canada. Anyone who normally lives outside Canada uses non-resident pricing. Proof may be requested.
Choose annual, 5-day, 3-day or 1-day coverage. Short-term products expire at midnight on their final valid day.
If yes, add the annual tidal Salmon Conservation Stamp. The stamp is not required solely for salmon that are released.
Non-Canadian residents intending to fish for halibut in Areas 23, 121 or 123 must obtain the licence in person from an authorized Independent Access Provider in Canada.

How to Buy a DFO Fishing Licence Online
Use the National Recreational Licensing System, commonly called NRLS.
- Open NRLS. Choose the returning-fisher login or create a new fisher account.
- Use the fisher’s correct personal information. Do not buy an adult licence under another person’s account.
- Select B.C. Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licence. Confirm that you are not selecting a provincial freshwater product.
- Choose the 2026/2027 fishing year. Check the year carefully before continuing.
- Select annual, 5-day, 3-day or 1-day coverage. For a short-term licence, verify the exact start date.
- Choose Canadian resident or non-resident. Use where the fisher normally lives, not the location of the trip.
- Add the salmon stamp when needed. Add it if any Pacific salmon may be retained.
- Review the transaction before payment. DFO does not normally refund a completed licence purchase.
- Open and save the issued licence. The payment receipt is not the licence.
- Save the PDF offline or print all pages. Carry it while fishing and while transporting catch.

- Do not record the same retained fish separately in both FishingBC and NRLS.
- FishingBC-to-NRLS linking expires and may need to be completed again for a new licence year.
- If the app account is unlinked, make sure complete records remain available through NRLS or a paper licence.
- Do not use the FishingBC map as a navigation chart or as the only legal-regulation check.
Buying the Licence Does Not Mean the Fishery Is Open
Limits, openings, closures, permitted gear and retention rules can change by area, subarea, species and date.
Do not rely only on a town name, marina name or phone location.
Check whether the species is open, the daily and possession limit, size range, permitted gear and special restrictions.
Use them to catch new openings, closures and in-season changes that may not match an older screenshot or printed guide.

Mandatory Catch Records: Record Before Continuing
The immediate catch record and the later iREC report are separate legal duties.

- Make the record immediately and permanently after retaining the fish.
- Do not wait until returning to the dock, lodge, vehicle or home.
- Measure Chinook and halibut before processing changes the required measurement.
- Do not duplicate the same entry in the app and NRLS.
- Electronic catch records cannot be corrected or deleted by the fisher; contact DFO if an error was entered.
- Records for released fish or other species may help with iREC, but they do not replace the mandatory retained-fish record.
How to Complete the Mandatory iREC Report
Adult and senior tidal licence holders are assigned a reporting period for every licence they purchase.
iREC micro-steps
- Open page 1 of the licence.
- Find the “iREC Reporting Requirement” box.
- Copy the Access ID, assigned dates and deadline.
- Open the official iREC website.
- Report only activity inside the assigned period.
- Enter dates, management areas, fishing methods and relevant lodge or paid-guide details.
- Enter kept and released finfish and shellfish by species.
- Enter the length of retained halibut when requested.
- Submit before the stated deadline and keep the completion confirmation.
Crab, Prawn, Clam and Shellfish Licence Rules
The tidal licence covers recreational shellfish harvesting, but licence possession alone does not make a beach, trap fishery or species open.
Review recreational limits, conservation closures, restricted areas and bivalve contamination closures every time.
Traps must be marked as required, including the operator’s name and telephone number.
Dungeness crab must measure at least 165 mm and red rock crab at least 115 mm across the widest part of the shell.
Female Dungeness and red rock crab cannot be possessed. Additional female-crab restrictions apply to listed species.
The carapace must remain attached until the crab reaches the fisher’s residence or is consumed.
- Do not harvest clams or oysters from aquaculture sites.
- Do not harvest within prohibited distances of wharves, floating accommodation, sewage or pollution sources.
- Release incidental bycatch alive at the place of capture with the least possible harm.
- Report shellfish effort and catch when it falls within the assigned iREC period.
Package and Transport Recreational Catch Correctly
The licence and catch records must remain available while catch is being transported.
- Package each fisher’s catch separately.
- Use only one fisher’s name on each package.
- Different fishers’ packages may share one cooler or shipping container.
- List the species, number of fish and number of packages outside the container to make inspection easier.
- Use clean containers and packaging intended for food.
- Follow species-specific cutting, skin, tail, head and identification requirements before processing catch.
- Do not sell, barter or attempt to sell recreationally caught fish or shellfish.
Lost, Damaged or Stolen DFO Licence
Replace the existing licence—do not purchase another valid licence for the same period.
- Transfer all catch records from the previous licence to the replacement.
- Make sure the salmon stamp appears on the replacement copy when applicable.
- Do not keep or use two valid licence copies with incomplete or different catch records.
- DFO states that it is illegal to hold more than one valid licence.

Is a DFO fishing licence the same as a B.C. freshwater licence?
No. The DFO B.C. Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licence covers recreational fishing and shellfish harvesting in B.C. tidal salt water. Non-tidal freshwater licensing is handled separately through the provincial system.
Does every age need a B.C. tidal fishing licence?
Yes. Every recreational finfish fisher and shellfish harvester needs a tidal licence. The annual juvenile licence for children under 16 is free, but it must still be obtained.
How much is a DFO tidal fishing licence in 2026?
Before GST, Canadian resident prices are $25.86 annual adult, $13.54 annual senior, $19.70 for 5 days, $13.54 for 3 days and $6.46 for 1 day. The juvenile annual licence is free. Non-resident fees are higher.
Do I need a salmon stamp for catch-and-release salmon fishing?
The base tidal licence is required to fish for salmon. The tidal Salmon Conservation Stamp is required when retaining Pacific salmon, but it is not required solely for salmon that are released.
Can a non-resident buy a DFO fishing licence online?
Usually yes. However, a non-Canadian resident intending to fish for halibut in Areas 23, 121 or 123 must obtain the licence in person from an authorized Independent Access Provider in Canada.
Can I show my DFO fishing licence on my phone?
Yes. You may show a downloaded licence PDF or use a properly linked FishingBC app. The licence and complete mandatory catch records must be immediately available for inspection while fishing and transporting catch.
What should I do if there is no mobile service?
Download the licence before leaving service. NRLS catch entry requires internet, so use a paper licence or a previously linked FishingBC app for immediate catch recording when offline.
Which fish must be recorded immediately?
All retained Chinook salmon and halibut must be recorded immediately in all tidal management areas. Retained lingcod must also be recorded in Areas 12–19 except 12-14 and in Subareas 20-5 to 20-7 and 29-5.
Is iREC required if I did not fish or caught nothing?
Yes for assigned adult and senior licence holders. You must submit the report for the period printed on the licence even if you did not fish or caught and retained nothing. Juvenile licence holders generally do not submit an independent report.
Can I get a refund or replace a lost DFO licence?
DFO states that completed licence purchases are not refundable. A lost, damaged or stolen licence can be reprinted free through NRLS or through an authorized provider. Transfer all previous catch records to the replacement.
