Caddo Lake Fishing Report: Ramps, Seasons & Insider Tips

Caddo Lake Texas–Louisiana • Reviewed July 13, 2026

Turn Conflicting Reports Into a Clear Fishing and Access Plan

Caddo Lake is a maze of cypress trees, bayous, shallow flats, submerged timber, grass and narrow boat lanes. The best lure will not help when the wrong ramp adds an hour, floating salvinia blocks the return lane or an old report sends you toward yesterday’s pattern.

This guide shows how to build a real current report, choose the correct Texas or Louisiana licence, match ramps to fishing zones, navigate safely and use practical bass, crappie and catfish patterns.

Caddo Lake Status on July 13, 2026

Provisional lake level 169.16 ft Average level displayed for July 13, 2026. A recent instantaneous reading showed approximately 169.18 feet.
TPWD weekly report Temporarily Paused Past reports remain useful for seasonal history, but none should be labelled as today’s bite.
State park alert Ramp & Pier Listed Closed The official alert still appears online. Call the park because the newer lake gauge and older closure notice conflict.

Important access conflict: the live lake-level source showed water above the listed conservation pool, while the state park alert continued to say the ramp and pier were closed because of low lake level. Do not decide from either page alone. Call 903-679-3351 before using the state park ramp or fishing pier.

Practical summer pattern: fish the first two hours after safe daylight and the final cooling period before dark. Start with open water beside healthy vegetation, shaded cypress edges, creek or bayou movement and channel-connected cover.

During full sun, bass can become easier to locate because shade becomes more defined. The afternoon may be less comfortable, but a small dark shade line beside one cypress trunk can be more precise than a large low-light feeding flat.

Five-part live report

How to Build a Current Caddo Lake Fishing Report

When a weekly report is unavailable, the solution is not guessing. Use five current inputs that directly affect fish location and access.

1. Lake elevation

Compare today with seven days ago. A small change can expose cypress knees, reduce shortcut depth or flood new shoreline cover.

2. Seventy-two-hour rainfall

Heavy upstream rain can move current, stain tributaries, float debris and change which ramp or bayou is easiest to use.

3. Wind direction

Wind moves floating salvinia. The launch that was clear yesterday can be blocked after an overnight directional change.

4. Water clarity

Compare the main lane, protected backwater and current-influenced water. Fish do not respond identically across the entire lake.

5. Ramp confirmation

Ask about actual ramp depth, vegetation, dock, parking and operating hours—not only whether the business is open.

6. Same-week fish evidence

Use the fishing date, general zone, depth, cover and method. A trophy photo without these details is not a report.

Insider shortcut: compare the last 12 hours of wind with the ramp’s open-water direction. Floating salvinia commonly piles into the shore receiving the wind. A west wind can clear one side while clogging another, even when lake level is unchanged.

Useful questions for a marina, guide or bait shop

  • Was the report from today or an earlier trip?
  • Was it upstream river, central cypress or lower lake?
  • Was the bite beside healthy grass or floating salvinia?
  • What depth was the boat sitting in?
  • Was the fish on the shade, wind or channel side?
  • Did the pattern improve before or after the front?
  • Was the ramp clear of floating plants?
  • Did falling or rising water change a boat lane?
Condition-to-tactic converter

What Should You Fish Under Today’s Conditions?

Condition Start here First lure or presentation What to avoid
Rising water Newly flooded cypress, bushes and drains connected to a channel. Swim jig, spinnerbait or weightless plastic. Isolated shallow cover with no route to deeper water.
Falling water Outside vegetation edge, drains and the first channel break. Texas rig, jig or compact moving bait. Dead-end backwater losing depth.
Fresh muddy inflow The colour-change edge, current break and protected side. High-vibration spinnerbait or dark compact plastic. The strongest dirty current with floating debris.
Clear, calm water Shade, isolated cover and deeper edge. Natural-colour soft plastic or subtle topwater. Noisy repeated casts directly onto fish-holding cover.
Strong sun Narrow shadow side of cypress trunks, docks and mats. Pitching bait, jig or slow-falling plastic. Treating every tree as equal.
Overcast and wind Wind-blown edges, open lanes and active bait. Bladed jig, spinnerbait, swim jig or topwater. Staying on one quiet protected pocket all day.
Hot, still summer afternoon Current, shade, channel depth and healthier vegetation. Slow vertical presentation or compact shade-target bait. Stagnant water under decaying solid vegetation.
Cold front Thicker cover near the previous feeding zone. Smaller jig, finesse plastic or suspended bait. Fast, wide searching without pausing.

Three-variable rule: before changing areas, change only one variable at a time—depth, speed or profile. Changing location, lure, colour and speed together prevents you from learning why the bite improved.

Choose by destination

Which Caddo Lake Ramp Fits Your Fishing Plan?

Big Cypress Bayou and river

Start with Highway 43

This free public ramp can shorten the run to upstream current, river bends, white bass routes and channel-oriented fishing.

Trade-off: it is not the closest launch for every central-lake cypress target.

Central cypress maze

Use an Uncertain-area marina

Shady Glade or Johnson’s Ranch can reduce the run into well-known central cypress water and provide local access information.

Trade-off: private launch fees and operating-hour checks apply.

South and east side

Compare Tucker’s or Buzzard Bay

These can fit trips aimed nearer the state line, southeast water or lodging on that side.

Trade-off: confirm jurisdiction, navigation route and current plant accumulation.

Beginner facilities

Normally the state park—but verify closure

The state park normally provides a developed ramp, pier, headquarters and facilities. The current alert still lists the ramp and pier closed.

Action: call before planning around either facility.

Ramp-pair strategy: choose one primary and one backup ramp on the same side of the lake. A backup 10–20 minutes away is more useful than a “better” ramp across the lake that adds a long tow and unfamiliar navigation.

Access directory

Caddo Lake Boat Ramps, Fees and Same-Day Checks

Access point Best practical use Published facility Contact and warning
Highway 43 Ramp Big Cypress Bayou, upstream channels, white bass and river-pattern fishing. Two-lane concrete ramp; no launch fee; normally open all year. Harrison County: 903-935-4808. Confirm depth and debris.

Shady Glade Marina Central cypress water, local services and Uncertain-area access. Single-lane concrete ramp; private fee. 903-789-3295. Confirm hours and floating vegetation.
Johnson’s Ranch Central-lake cypress, paddling routes and guided-tour area. Single-lane concrete ramp; private fee. 903-789-3213. Ask about parking and route conditions.
Cripp’s Camp Western mid-lake access. Single-lane concrete ramp; private fee. 903-789-3233. Call before towing.
Tucker’s Camp South-side trips and nearby fishing or lodging. Two single-lane ramps; private fee. 318-422-6057 or 903-601-4320.
Buzzard Bay Landing Near-state-line and eastern access planning. Single-lane ramp; private fee. 903-720-7629 or 903-918-3407.
Potter’s Point North-shore access where current operations allow. Single-lane private ramp. 903-930-1940. Confirm fee, road and ramp condition.

Ramp call script: “I have a [boat length and type] arriving around [time]. Is the ramp open, how deep is the concrete end, is the dock usable, is salvinia blocking the lane, what is the fee, what payment is accepted and is trailer parking expected to fill?”

Current park access conflict

Caddo Lake State Park Ramp, Pier and Shore Fishing

The general park page describes a boat ramp and fishing pier, but the active park-alert system still lists the boat ramp, fishing pier and swimming area as closed due to low lake level.

The more recent lake gauge showed water near or above the conservation-pool reference. This may mean the alert has not yet been removed, the park facility has a local access problem or another condition still prevents reopening.

Do not assume the alert is wrong. Only park staff can confirm whether the ramp and pier have reopened. Call 903-679-3351 before towing a boat or planning a pier-fishing trip.

Licence-free fishing

Texas state-park shore rule

Fishing from shore inside a Texas state park is generally licence-free. All species limits, methods and park rules still apply.

Closure impact

Pier access may be unavailable

The licence exemption does not create access to a closed pier. Ask park staff which shore areas, if any, are currently available.

Park entry

Reservation and day-use planning

The park often reaches capacity from March through November. Reserve entry when possible.

Drinking water alert

Bring water when relevant

The park also posts a nitrate advisory for its water system. Boiling does not remove nitrates. Review the park alert before relying on site drinking water.

Border-water decision

Texas or Louisiana Fishing Licence for Caddo Lake

Angler Likely licence route What the reciprocal agreement covers Important mistake to avoid
Texas resident Valid Texas resident fishing licence with freshwater coverage. Common Texas–Louisiana border waters including Caddo Lake. Assuming Texas coverage extends to unrelated inland Louisiana waters.
Louisiana resident Valid Louisiana resident Basic Fishing Licence. Common Caddo Lake border water. Assuming the resident licence covers unrelated inland Texas water.
Visitor from another state Nonresident licence for the jurisdiction being fished. The resident reciprocity normally does not apply. Crossing the state line because the boundary is not visually obvious.
Texas state-park shore angler Texas shore-fishing exemption inside state park property. Not needed for that specific exempt activity. Using the exemption after leaving the park or fishing from a boat.
Texas youth under 17 Normally exempt from Texas licence-package requirements. Age exemption may be recognized under the reciprocal agreement. Ignoring bag, size and method limits.
Louisiana youth age 17 or younger Normally exempt from Louisiana Basic Fishing Licence. Home-state exemption is included in the border agreement. Not carrying proof of age.

Boundary tip for visitors: choose a launch and fishing plan that remains on one state’s side unless you have confirmed coverage for both. Caddo does not have a visible painted line across every bayou, and navigation mistakes can unintentionally change jurisdiction.

2026 cost comparison

Caddo-specific limits

Bass, Crappie, Catfish and White Bass Regulations

Species Length rule Daily limit Practical example
Largemouth bass Protected 14–18-inch slot Eight black bass combined; no more than four largemouth 18 inches or longer A 16-inch fish must be released. A 14-inch fish or 18-inch fish may be retained.
Spotted bass No minimum listed for Caddo Counts inside the eight-black-bass aggregate Identify species before finalizing the daily count.
Black and white crappie No minimum length 25 combined Both species count toward one total.
Blue and channel catfish No minimum length 50 combined; no more than five may be 30 inches or longer Large fish require a separate running count.
Flathead catfish 18-inch minimum 10 Release every fish below 18 inches.
White bass No minimum listed for Caddo 25 Count white bass separately from hybrids.
Alligator gar Any size under applicable rules One; mandatory harvest reporting applies in Texas Report a Texas harvest within the required period.

Slot-language trap: “14–18-inch slot” does not mean fish inside the slot may be kept. The slot is protected. Release fish longer than 14 inches and shorter than 18 inches.

Repeatable local-pattern logic

Real Caddo Lake Insider Tips and Tricks

The one-side rule

Do not fish every side of every tree equally

After a bite, note whether it came from shade, wind, current, deeper water or the protected side. Fish that same side on the next ten similar trees.

The route rule

Cover must connect to movement

A beautiful isolated cypress in one foot of dead-end water may hold less than an ordinary tree beside a drain, lane or channel.

The salvinia rule

Fish the edge, not the dead centre

Healthy fish activity is more likely around openings, edges and water movement than under a thick stagnant mat with decaying vegetation.

The shadow clock

Shade position changes every hour

A productive tree at 9 a.m. may stop when the shadow moves. Follow the same shadow angle to a new bank instead of waiting all day.

The crappie duplicate

Copy depth and side, not only tree type

When one cypress holds crappie eight feet down on the north side, repeat that exact depth and side before searching randomly.

The return-lane rule

Never enter thick plants without an exit

Wind can close a narrow opening behind you. Confirm a second exit or remain close to a marked lane.

Water-colour trick: lower a white or bright lure beside the boat and note the depth where it disappears. Repeat at another area. This creates a simple visibility comparison without pretending to know exact turbidity.

Quiet-water trick: when a boat enters a small protected pocket, stop the outboard early and use a trolling motor, paddle or drift. The first casts are often the highest-value casts because shallow fish have not yet been alerted.

High-sun trick: summer midday is not automatically useless. Fish may concentrate into smaller, darker shade. Make fewer but more accurate casts into the narrowest shadow beside cover connected to depth.

Bass pattern builder

How to Catch Caddo Lake Largemouth Bass

Pattern Best situation Primary bait Follow-up bait
Topwater edge Low light, wind ripple, active bait or vegetation openings. Frog, walking bait or buzz-style lure. Weightless plastic after a missed strike.
Cypress shade Bright sun and defined shadow. Jig or Texas-rigged plastic. Slow-falling stickbait.
Wind-blown vegetation Moderate wind and active bait movement. Swim jig, spinnerbait or bladed jig. Pitch a plastic to missed targets.
Falling-water drain Water pulling from shallow backwater. Compact crankbait, spinnerbait or jig. Finesse worm on the deeper side.
Cold-front cover Bright sky after a front. Compact jig or finesse plastic. Suspending jerkbait near clearer edge water.
Summer current Hot water with bayou or river movement. Moving bait across the current edge. Slow plastic in the protected pocket.

Missed-frog system: do not immediately cast the frog five more times. Drop a weightless or lightly weighted soft plastic into the same hole and let it fall without excessive action.

Measure immediately: a strong bass from heavy cover can be returned faster when the measuring board, pliers and camera are prepared before the first cast.

Crappie efficiency system

How to Find Caddo Lake Crappie Faster

1

Start with a route, not random timber

Choose trees beside a channel, drain, turn or depth transition. Crappie use travel routes and vertical cover.

2

Fish above the expected fish

Crappie commonly feed upward. Start slightly above the marked fish or expected holding level.

3

Measure depth instead of guessing

Mark line or count reel turns so the productive depth can be repeated on the next tree.

4

Use the 30-second control test

Make one clean drop on each key side and depth. When fish are grouped tightly, long random soaking is less efficient than controlled repeats.

5

Duplicate the exact productive detail

Record depth, tree diameter, shade, channel distance and bait colour. Repeat the strongest combination.

Crappie trigger: hold the jig still before adding more action. On Caddo’s vertical wood, boat movement and water movement may already provide enough motion.

River and channel targets

White Bass and Catfish Tips

White bass

Use current and bait as the map

Check Big Cypress Bayou, channel bends, current seams and schooling bait during cooler periods. Birds can help, but confirm fish with sonar before chasing every bird.

Channel catfish

Fish feeding routes near depth

Target channel edges, current breaks, flats near deeper water and areas receiving food after rainfall.

Blue catfish

Follow bait and main channels

Use fresh legal bait and monitor channel structure. Keep a separate count of fish 30 inches or longer.

Flathead catfish

Heavy cover and deeper cavities

Fish near large woody cover and deeper routes using legal methods. Release fish under the 18-inch minimum.

Passive-gear warning: trotlines, juglines, yo-yos and other passive devices have separate tags, tending schedules, placement rules and state-jurisdiction requirements. Rod-and-reel rules are not enough.

Seasonal micro-patterns

Caddo Lake Fishing by Season

Period Primary fish movement High-value location Insider adjustment
January–February Bass, crappie and white bass concentrate around channels and warming trends. River bends, channel timber and protected water near depth. The first warming afternoon after several cold days can outperform an equally warm morning.
March Trophy bass and crappie move toward shallow spawning cover. Cypress flats connected to drains and channel routes. Fish the deepest tree on a shallow line before moving completely shallow.
April–May Spawn, post-spawn and increasing bluegill activity. Shade, fry-guarding areas, grass edges and first post-spawn depth. Follow the shade and bluegill activity rather than repeating old bed locations.
June–August Fish use shade, current, open vegetation and deeper water. Channel-connected shade and moving water. Avoid stagnant mats; fish the first clean edge beside them.
September–October Cooling water spreads bait and improves moving-bait patterns. Wind-blown grass edges, bayou mouths and open lanes. Use birds and surface activity, then fish below the visible bait after the surface stops.
November–December Bass and crappie transition toward winter channels and grouped cover. Channel timber, deeper intersections and stable water. Slow down after locating fish; winter schools can occupy a very small section.
Kayak, canoe and shore options

Kayak, Canoe and Bank Fishing at Caddo Lake

Kayak fishing

Choose a short protected route

Launch near the intended fishing zone so open-water crossings are unnecessary. Carry a visible flag and stay clear of powered boat lanes.

Canoe fishing

Keep weight low and balanced

A canoe can navigate shallow water but becomes difficult in wind. Avoid standing, overloading and long unprotected crossings.

State-park shore fishing

Confirm currently available access

The general shore exemption may apply, but the pier remains listed in a closure alert. Ask park staff where fishing is currently allowed.

Private marina bank fishing

Permission and fee may apply

Do not assume a marina dock or shoreline is open to noncustomers. Call and ask about fishing permission, hours and fees.

Never place fish on a stringer beside a kayak in alligator water. Use a closed cooler or release fish immediately. Keep hands, pets and food away from the shoreline.

Giant salvinia and boat performance

How Vegetation Changes Fishing and Ramp Access

Vegetation condition Fishing value Boat risk Best response
Healthy submerged vegetation Provides oxygen, shade, bait and ambush edges. Can wrap the propeller or trolling motor. Fish points, holes and outside edges.
Thin floating salvinia Creates shade and overhead cover. Can spread across a lane with wind. Fish the clean edge and maintain an exit route.
Solid stagnant mat May have poor oxygen under decaying material. Can block visibility, cooling water and return path. Avoid forcing the boat through; find open moving water.
Ramp accumulation Not relevant if launching is impossible. Trailer, prop and intake obstruction. Use the confirmed backup ramp.

Clean, drain and dry

  • Remove plants from the trailer and bunks.
  • Inspect the propeller and lower unit.
  • Clean the trolling motor and anchor.
  • Drain livewells, baitwells and bilge water.
  • Remove plant fragments from paddles and footwear.
  • Do not transport live nongame fish to another lake.
Wildlife and weather

Caddo Lake Alligator and Boating Safety

  • Wear a correctly fitted personal flotation device.
  • Keep children and pets close to adults.
  • Never feed an alligator.
  • Keep fish, bait and food away from the shoreline.
  • Leave the water before lightning reaches the lake.
  • Carry navigation lights and a bright handheld light.
  • Save the ramp and emergency contacts offline.
  • Share a float plan with another person.
  • Carry more drinking water than expected.
  • Use insect and sun protection.

Alligator approach: move away calmly, secure fish and pets, and leave the immediate area. Do not throw food, bait or fish to distract the animal because that teaches it to approach people.

Lightning rule: cypress trees do not provide safe storm shelter. Leave exposed water before the storm reaches the lake rather than waiting beneath tall trees.

Plan a Caddo Lake Fishing Trip Step by Step

1

Choose the target species

Select bass, crappie, white bass or catfish. The best ramp and section change with the target.

2

Choose the fishing zone

Decide between upstream Big Cypress Bayou, central cypress water, lower lake, Louisiana side or a protected paddling route.

3

Check level, rain and wind

Use the live gauge, the last seventy-two hours of rain and the overnight wind direction.

4

Call the primary and backup ramps

Verify water depth, vegetation, dock, parking, hours and payment method.

5

Confirm licence jurisdiction

Use reciprocity only when eligible. Visitors should remain in the licensed jurisdiction unless dual coverage is confirmed.

6

Save navigation offline

Mark the ramp, first lane, state boundary, every major fork and the return track.

7

Choose two patterns, not twenty lures

Bring one search pattern and one target-cover follow-up. Add species-specific backup tackle.

8

Prepare measurement and fish handling

Place the measuring board, pliers and cooler where they can be reached without searching.

9

Set the return and storm cutoff

Choose the latest safe return time and the weather condition that ends the trip.

10

Clean and drain before leaving

Remove all plant material and drain the boat before entering another road or waterbody.

Frequently asked questions

Caddo Lake Fishing FAQs

What is the current Caddo Lake fishing report?

TPWD weekly reports remain temporarily paused. The July 13, 2026 lake-level source showed an average near 169.16 feet and a recent instantaneous reading near 169.18 feet. Use the live gauge, rainfall, wind, ramp status and dated local information for the current plan.

Is the Caddo Lake State Park boat ramp open?

The current park-alert system still lists the ramp, fishing pier and swimming area closed because of low lake level. The newer gauge appears higher, so call the park at 903-679-3351 before relying on the ramp or pier.

Why does the gauge look normal when the park ramp says closed?

The alert may reflect a local ramp or pier condition, may not yet have been removed, or may involve a different measurement concern. Only park staff can confirm actual facility status.

Do I need a Texas or Louisiana licence?

Texas and Louisiana residents may use a valid resident licence from their home state on common border water under the reciprocal agreement. Other visitors should buy for the jurisdiction they plan to fish.

Can a nonresident fish both sides with one licence?

Do not assume so. The resident reciprocal agreement does not automatically give every nonresident dual-state coverage. Confirm with TPWD or LDWF before intentionally crossing the boundary.

What is the largemouth bass slot limit?

Largemouth bass longer than 14 inches but shorter than 18 inches must be released. Fish 14 inches or shorter and fish 18 inches or longer may be retained within the daily limits.

How many black bass can I keep?

The daily limit is eight black bass in combination, with no more than four largemouth bass measuring 18 inches or longer.

What is the crappie limit?

The daily limit is 25 black and white crappie in combination. No minimum length is listed under the Caddo special regulation.

Which ramp is best for a first-time boater?

A private Uncertain-area marina can provide local access information and a shorter run into central cypress water. The state park would normally be beginner-friendly, but its ramp remains listed in a closure alert.

Is Highway 43 Ramp free?

TPWD lists it as a free, two-lane concrete public ramp normally open all year. Call Harrison County at 903-935-4808 when water, debris or weather may affect use.

When is the best time for bass fishing?

March is historically a high-value trophy-bass month. Spring is strongest around shallow cypress and vegetation, fall around cooling-water bait movement and summer around shade, current and channel-connected cover.

How do I avoid getting lost?

Save the ramp, record the complete track, drop a waypoint at every major fork, stay in marked lanes at speed and return before darkness or fog.

Are there alligators?

Yes. Never feed them, keep pets and children close, secure fish and food, and move away if an alligator approaches.

Does salvinia affect fishing?

Yes. Thin edges can create shade and ambush cover, while dense stagnant mats can reduce oxygen, block ramps and interfere with motors. Fish clean edges and maintain an exit route.

Do I have to drain the boat?

Yes. Texas requires water to be drained from boats and onboard receptacles when leaving or approaching public freshwater. Remove every visible plant fragment before travelling.

Can I eat fish from Caddo Lake?

A consumption advisory is in effect. Review current Texas health guidance before regularly eating largemouth bass or freshwater drum from Caddo Lake.

The Caddo Lake Advantage Is Better Decisions, Not More Lures

The strongest anglers reduce uncertainty before launching. They compare level, rain and wind; choose a ramp near the target; save every turn; fish the productive side of cover; measure bass correctly and keep a backup access plan.

The complete Caddo stack is: live gauge + current alert + confirmed ramp + correct state licence + recorded track + repeatable pattern + special limits + vegetation exit + weather cutoff + clean, drain and dry.
