Read the capacity plate before you count rod holders

U.S. Coast Guard safe-loading guidance says not to load passengers and cargo beyond the boat’s safe carrying capacity. Weight should be distributed evenly fore-and-aft and side-to-side, kept low where practical and secured against shifting.

A fishing load is still cargo. Batteries, fuel, livewell water, coolers, anchors, trolling motors, tackle boxes and other equipment reduce the remaining weight margin for passengers.

Answer these before the boat leaves the driveway

  • Who manages the access? State agency, county, city, federal park, utility, marina or private concession?
  • Is it open today? Check the current conditions page—not an old map pin.
  • What craft can launch? Trailer boat, paddlecraft, hand launch or vessel-length restriction?
  • What does current water level change? Ramp slope, exposed end, shallow approach or dock access?
  • Is a fee or permit required? Entry fee, launch permit, state park pass or lake fishing permit?
  • Is an AIS inspection required? Check both entry and exit requirements.
