Which BC Salmon Fishing License Do You Need?

Ocean, saltwater or tidal river section: purchase a federal B.C. Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licence through NRLS. Add the annual $7.39 Salmon Conservation Stamp only when retaining Pacific salmon.

River or lake above the tidal boundary: anglers who require a licence need a provincial Basic Freshwater Fishing Licence through WILD. Add the $17.14 BC-resident or $34.29 visitor non-tidal salmon surcharge when retaining salmon other than kokanee.

Releasing every salmon: the salmon stamp is not required, but the correct basic licence and an open salmon fishery are still required.

Do Children Need a BC Salmon Fishing Licence?

Tidal water: every age

  • Every child needs an individual tidal licence.
  • The annual juvenile licence is free.
  • The $7.39 stamp is required if the child retains salmon.
  • Juveniles generally do not submit an individual iREC report.

BC resident under 16

  • No freshwater licence or stamp is required.
  • Adult accompaniment is not required.
  • The child receives an individual quota.
  • All openings and fishing rules still apply.

Visitor under 16

  • May fish without a freshwater licence when accompanied by a licence holder aged 16 or older.
  • The child’s retained fish count toward the adult’s quota.
  • Purchase an individual licence and stamps to provide a separate quota.

When a Digital Licence Is Not Enough

A digital freshwater licence can be carried when a conservation surcharge applies but no mandatory retention record is required.

When both a surcharge and a retention record are required, carry an unmodified paper copy. This includes situations where a retained adult Chinook must be entered.

Measure Chinook Correctly Before Recording

Tidal record: head-on length

Record the retained Chinook’s head-on length. Measure with the head and tail naturally positioned, following the method required by the licence or current DFO guidance.

Freshwater adult definition: fork length

Most non-tidal waters define adult Chinook as over 50 cm from the nose to the fork of the tail.

  • Specified lower Fraser-area rivers and dates use over 62 cm.
  • Specified north-coast rivers use over 65 cm year-round.
  • Check the exact river and date before deciding whether the record is required.

How to Record Retained Chinook

Tidal-water Chinook

Immediately and permanently record every retained Chinook using an approved method:

  • Permanent ink on the paper licence;
  • The NRLS online catch log; or
  • The NRLS-linked FishingBC app catch log.

Annual tidal limit: no more than 10 Chinook may be retained coastwide during the licence year from waters open to Chinook retention.

Non-tidal adult Chinook

Immediately record every retained adult Chinook on the provincial basic angling licence.

  • Most waters: over 50 cm fork length;
  • Specified rivers and dates: over 62 cm;
  • Specified north-coast rivers: over 65 cm.

Carry an unmodified paper licence whenever this retention record is required.

Record immediately—not at the dock or campsite

Complete the required entry as soon as the fish is retained. The licence and current catch records must be available for inspection while fishing or transporting the catch.

When the Basic Freshwater Licence Is Not Enough

Steelhead

A separate Steelhead Conservation Surcharge is required to fish for steelhead, including release-only steelhead fishing.

Classified Waters

Some rivers require an additional Classified Waters Licence, particularly for non-resident anglers during classified periods.

National parks

Provincial freshwater licences are not substitutes for a Parks Canada fishing permit inside a national park.

White sturgeon

A separate White Sturgeon Conservation Licence is required for the specified Fraser River watershed catch-and-release fishery.

Lake-specific surcharges

Kootenay and Shuswap Lake fisheries can require separate trout or char conservation surcharges.

Emergency restrictions

Drought, water temperature, conservation concerns or run size can produce short-notice closures.
