Great Slave Lake is one lake — but not one fishing trip
A Yellowknife day trip, a Hay River boat launch, a Resolution Bay outing and an East Arm expedition can all involve Great Slave Lake while requiring different access planning, catch limits, closures, navigation tools and even different fishing permits.
Which Great Slave Lake trip are you actually planning?
Yellowknife / North Arm
The easiest major visitor base for flights, lodging, guides and services.
Do not assume every Yellowknife waterfront point is a public boat launch. Confirm the exact ramp/operator before towing a boat.
Hay River / south shore
One of the clearest DIY access choices because Porritt Landing is a municipal boat-launch and seasonal docking facility.
Fort Resolution / Resolution Bay
Road-accessible through Highway 6, but the Little Buffalo River and specified southern Resolution Bay water use tighter walleye and pike rules.
East Arm / Thaıdene Nëné
The most remote and legally layered Great Slave Lake trip. Expect aircraft or boat access, Area VI lake-trout rules, national-park boundaries and mandatory visitor registration.
Determine the legal fishing plan before thinking about a hotspot
Yellowknife, Hay River, Fort Resolution or remote East Arm.
Main lake, Area VI, tributary, special bay or National Park Reserve?
NWT licence outside national parks; Parks Canada permit inside park water.
DCL, possession, size rule and seasonal exception.
Road, wind, cold water, ice, wildfire, bloom and operator status.
Great Slave Lake is large enough that official agencies even measure its area differently
Road-accessible town does not always mean road-accessible fishing water
| Base | Road access | Confirmed access fact | Planning warning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yellowknife | Highway 3 | Major visitor/service base on Great Slave Lake. | Verify the exact launch, dock or outfitter before towing. Do not treat the entire waterfront as public launching access. |
| Hay River | Highway 2 | Porritt Landing is a town-owned seasonal docking and boat-launch facility on Vale Island. | Docking, parking and seasonal facility rules can change. |
| Fort Resolution | Highway 6 | Road-accessible community near Resolution Bay. | Verify the exact current launch and local water access before arrival. |
| East Arm | No road | Common approaches include aircraft, boat or snowmobile. | Park registration, Area VI, park boundary and weather-delay planning matter. |
Area VI is a lake-trout limit boundary — not an extra territorial licence by itself
GNWT defines Area VI as the portion east of a line along 112°30′00″ W from the north shore of Great Slave Lake to the north shore of Blanchette Island, then following defined island-to-island and mainland lines around Blanchette and Etthen islands.
The practical consequence for a sport angler is a tighter lake-trout sublimit.

Great Slave Lake species limits at a glance
DCL is the number of fish that may be caught and retained during one midnight-to-midnight period. PL is the total number that may be possessed, including fish stored at home.
| Species / water | DCL | PL | Critical detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lake trout — Great Slave Lake + tributaries to 1 km upstream | 2 | 3 | Only 1 daily and 2 in possession may come from Area VI. Only one GSL lake trout in possession may exceed 70 cm fork length. |
| Lake trout — Area VI | 1 | 2 | These fish also count toward the overall Great Slave Lake 2/3 limit. |
| Northern pike — Great Slave Lake + tributaries | 3 | 5 | Hay River, Mackenzie management waters and southern Resolution Bay exceptions are tighter. |
| Inconnu / coney — Great Slave Lake + tributaries | 1 | 2 | No special size limit listed in the current table. |
| Lake whitefish — default NWT rule | 5 | 10 | Applies where no more specific water rule overrides it. |
| Burbot — default NWT rule | 5 | 10 | Applies where no more specific water rule overrides it. |
| Arctic grayling — default NWT rule | 3 | 5 | Mackenzie River Management Area and Baker Creek have special rules. |
Three numbers control a Great Slave Lake trout cooler
Measure to the fork — not the end of the tail
Fork length
Measure from the tip of the snout to the fork in the tail.
Only one such lake trout may be in possession.
There is no single Great Slave Lake walleye number
| Water | Dates | DCL / PL | What changes? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default NWT water where no special rule applies | Apr. 1–Jun. 6 | 1 / 1 | Spring conservation limit. |
| Default NWT water where no special rule applies | Jun. 7–Mar. 31 | 4 / 7 | Higher regular-season limit. |
| Hay River + Mackenzie River Management Area on GSL | Apr. 1–Jun. 6 | 1 / 1 | Special management row. |
| Hay River + Mackenzie River Management Area on GSL | Jun. 7–Mar. 31 | 2 / 3 | Lower than the ordinary NWT 4/7 rule. |
| Little Buffalo River + specified southern Resolution Bay | Apr. 1–Jun. 6 | 1 / 1 | Counts in Great Slave Lake/tributary total. |
| Little Buffalo River + specified southern Resolution Bay | Jun. 7–Mar. 31 | 1 / 2 | Still tighter after June 7. |
| Mosquito Creek + GSL within 1 km of mouth | May 1–Jun. 30 | Closed | No sport fishing for any species. |
| Mosquito Creek + GSL within 1 km of mouth | Jul. 1–Apr. 30 | 3 / 5 | Specific water rule. |
Main-lake pike is 3/5, but southern and western exceptions are tighter

Exactly age 16 is not in the NWT “under 16” exemption
Resident / Canadian resident
Federal regulations allow NWT residents and resident Canadians under age 16 to sport fish without the ordinary licence, subject to special-area rules.
Licence generally required
The legal exemption says under 16. A 16-year-old is therefore outside that age exemption.
Resident / Canadian resident
Federal regulations provide the ordinary licence exemption to NWT residents/resident Canadians age 65 or older, subject to special-area rules.
2026 sport-fishing licence prices
Cross into Thaıdene Nëné National Park Reserve and your NWT licence stops being the fishing permit
Territorial water
Use the applicable NWT sport-fishing rules and licence.
NWT licence no longer valid
National Park Reserve fishing requires its own Parks Canada permit.
Permit still mandatory
Parks Canada is currently waiving the fee, but anglers age 16+ must still obtain, sign and carry the permit.
Thaıdene Nëné is not a park where you arrive and find visitor services
No normal visitor-service infrastructure in the reserve.
Parks Canada says a day or two is normal and a week+ can occur.

OCT 31*
Yellowknife River between Prosperous and Bluefish lakes
GNWT’s current 2026–27 guide and current ECC web page list September 1–October 31.
The federal consolidated regulation page reviewed in August 2026 still displays September 1–30. If planning to fish this reach during October, confirm directly with GNWT ECC before fishing.
These rules follow you around Great Slave Lake
Maximum 2 hooks on that line; line must be attended.
Stay within 50 m; max 2 hooks on each.
No fishing within 23 m downstream of an obstruction, fishway or leap.
The possession limit does not reset when you reach the cabin
Possession includes fish stored at your residence.
Do not remove skin so that species cannot be determined.
GNWT says two fillets are regarded as one fish.
Outside your residence: name + Sport Fishing Licence number.
GNWT’s release advice is simple: reduce fight time and handling
Avoid fighting a fish longer than necessary.
Keep the fish in the water when possible.
Support fish carefully.
Protect sensitive tissue during hook removal.
Fish-remain disposal changes when you enter the National Park Reserve
Pack remains out
General GNWT rules prohibit leaving fish remains in water or on lake ice, and GNWT health/safety guidance recommends sealing remains and packing them back to town.
Specific park instruction
The current park fishing-permit terms instruct anglers to puncture the swim bladder and place entrails into deep or moving water downstream of camp, using a boat if available.
Great Slave Lake can experience cyanobacteria blooms
NWT Health and Social Services reports that blooms have occurred on Great Slave Lake, particularly around Yellowknife Bay, the North Arm, West Mirage Islands and Baker Island.
Bag limits and fish-consumption advice answer different questions
NWT Health and Social Services maintains a separate fish-consumption program because contaminants such as mercury can accumulate in fish, particularly older predatory fish.
Walleye, northern pike and lake trout can accumulate more mercury through age and the food chain.
Great Slave Lake itself is not currently listed among the site-specific waters carrying a consumption notice on the GNWT notice page reviewed for this guide.
GNWT updates its site-specific notices as new contaminant data become available.
Current notices: GNWT Site-Specific Fish Consumption Advice .
Great Slave Lake can be dangerously cold even when the air feels like summer
Parks Canada says McLeod Bay summer water is not much warmer than this.
Significant winds and waves can develop.
Recommended by Parks Canada in the Great Slave Lake area.
- Canadian-approved PFD/life jacket for everyone aboard.
- File a sail plan with a reliable person.
- Check boat condition, fuel and required safety equipment.
- Postpone when the weather is poor.
- Carry navigation independent of cell coverage.
- Carry enough provisions for unexpected weather delay.
Calendar date is not proof of Great Slave Lake ice safety
Yellowknife promotes Great Slave Lake ice fishing as a major winter activity, but both GNWT and the City emphasize actual ice assessment rather than assuming that cold weather creates uniform safe thickness.

Great Slave Lake, Northwest Territories
Orientation only. Do not use Google Maps alone to identify Area VI, park boundaries, reefs, shoals or legal closure zones.
Great Slave Lake mistakes that look reasonable until you read the rules
Area VI allows only one daily.
The federal exemption is for anglers under 16.
It does not.
Fee waived does not mean permit waived.
Area VI itself is primarily a special lake-trout limit issue; the extra permit question arises when entering National Park Reserve water.
Hay River and other named waters are tighter.
Season and named water can change it.
DCL/PL are individual limits.
Barbless hooks are mandatory.
Confirm exact launch access before towing.
Current GNWT guidance and federal consolidated text conflict; verify before a late-season trip.
East Arm water can remain around 10°C.
Ask the authority the exact boundary question
“I plan to fish Great Slave Lake near [bay / river / coordinates] on [date]. I am targeting [species]. Can you confirm whether this location is inside Area VI, a special water or Thaıdene Nëné National Park Reserve, and confirm the daily, possession and size limit that applies?”

Practical questions answered for 2026–27
What fish is Great Slave Lake best known for?
Lake trout is its signature recreational species, particularly in the deep East Arm. Northern pike, inconnu, walleye, Arctic grayling, lake whitefish and burbot are also important parts of the Great Slave Lake system.
What is the Great Slave Lake lake-trout limit?
The Great Slave Lake and tributary lake-trout daily limit is two and the possession limit is three. Only one daily lake trout may come from Area VI, only two Area VI lake trout may be possessed, and only one lake trout in possession from all Great Slave Lake areas may exceed 70 cm fork length.
Do I need an extra licence just because I enter Area VI?
Area VI carries a special lake-trout restriction, but it is not the same thing as Thaıdene Nëné National Park Reserve. The separate permit requirement arises when you enter national-park waters. Check both boundaries independently.
Does a 16-year-old need an NWT fishing licence?
Generally yes. The federal NWT Fishery Regulations exempt eligible residents and Canadian residents who are under 16. A person who is exactly 16 is not under 16 and therefore falls outside that age exemption.
How much is a nonresident NWT fishing licence?
GNWT currently lists $51.73 for a nonresident seasonal licence, $38.80 for three days and $12.93 for one day, including GST.
Are barbless hooks required on Great Slave Lake?
Yes. Barbless hooks are mandatory for sport fishing throughout the Northwest Territories.
Can I use two rods while fishing from a boat?
During ordinary open-water angling, GNWT permits one line or rod per angler with no more than two hooks on that line. Ice fishing allows up to two lines, subject to the ice-fishing rules.
Can I use live minnows?
No. Using live fish as bait is prohibited in the Northwest Territories.
Is the NWT fishing licence valid in Thaıdene Nëné?
No. Recreational fishing inside Thaıdene Nëné National Park Reserve requires a Parks Canada fishing permit. The permit fee is currently waived, but the permit itself remains mandatory.
Which Great Slave Lake bays require the Parks Canada permit?
Parks Canada’s June 2026 reminder specifically identifies Wildbread Bay, Charlton Bay and portions of Christie and McLeod bays among Great Slave Lake waters inside the National Park Reserve. Use the current park boundary map for the exact line.
Can I drive to the East Arm?
There is no road into Thaıdene Nëné National Park Reserve. Common approaches include aircraft or watercraft, while Łutsël K’é provides scheduled air access close to the park.
Where can I launch a boat around Hay River?
Porritt Landing on Vale Island is the Town of Hay River’s municipal seasonal boat-launch and docking facility. Check current municipal rules and seasonal status before arrival.
Are cyanobacteria blooms a Great Slave Lake concern?
They can be. NWT Health and Social Services says blooms have been reported on Great Slave Lake, especially around Yellowknife Bay, the North Arm, West Mirage Islands and Baker Island. Avoid visibly scummy or discoloured water and do not boil bloom water in an attempt to make it safe.
Is the Yellowknife River closed through September or October?
GNWT’s current 2026–27 fishing guide lists the Yellowknife River between Prosperous and Bluefish lakes as closed September 1 through October 31. The consolidated federal regulation page reviewed in August 2026 still displays September 1 through September 30. Because those official sources conflict, confirm directly with GNWT ECC before fishing that reach in October.
The best Great Slave Lake “spot” is the one whose access, boundary and limit you actually understand
Start with Yellowknife, Hay River, Fort Resolution or the East Arm. Then identify whether you are in ordinary territorial water, a named special-rule water, Area VI or Thaıdene Nëné National Park Reserve.
Once that boundary is correct, the rest becomes much easier: get the right licence or permit, check the species limit, use barbless hooks, download navigation material, and make the final go/no-go decision using current road, weather, ice and water information.
