Fish Utah Lake smarter: species, legal limits, ramps & today’s safety decisions
Utah Lake is enormous but exceptionally shallow. That combination makes wind, water level, algae, marina choice and fishing depth unusually important. White bass and channel catfish offer simple starting points; walleye, bass, crappie, bluegill, carp and northern pike create very different trips.
Current Utah Lake status — August 25, 2026
Harmful algal bloom
Utah County’s latest posted health notice keeps Utah Lake under a lake-wide Warning Advisory.
Lindon Marina
Lindon Marina is under the higher Danger Advisory. Do not use it as a normal boat-launch option while that advisory remains.
State Park ramps
Utah State Parks listed all five maintained Utah Lake ramps open.
Check level first
Utah Lake Authority updates lake elevation hourly and recommends checking your intended marina before launching.
Fishing season
Utah’s general season is Jan. 1–Dec. 31 unless a specific water or species rule says otherwise.
When two official pages disagree, use the newer health notice
Utah Lake State Park page
Last updated August 4, 2026. Its embedded conditions display still shows algae as “CLEAR.”
Useful for park fees, hours, decontamination and its dated water-level snapshot — not the newest HAB status.
Utah County Health Department
Updated August 17, 2026: Utah Lake is under a lake-wide Warning Advisory and Lindon Marina is under a Danger Advisory.
For health-related trip decisions, this newer advisory is the information to follow.
Fishing is not treated the same at Warning and Danger locations
Most of Utah Lake
- Do not swim or water ski.
- Do not drink or swallow lake water.
- Avoid algae scum while boating.
- Keep animals away from affected water.
- Clean fish well and discard guts.
Higher-risk advisory
- Do not swim or water ski.
- Do not drink the water.
- Do not boat.
- Keep animals away.
- Use caution if fishing.
- If fishing, clean fish well and discard guts.
The numbers most Utah Lake anglers need first
Only 1 may be over 12″.
Must be immediately killed.
Only 1 may exceed 24″.
Six checks before you leave home
Check the exact marina or shoreline — not just “Utah Lake.”
Decide on white bass, catfish, walleye, bass or panfish.
Provo, American Fork, Saratoga Springs or south shore?
Check the live lake level and marina depth before towing a boat.
A shallow basin can become rough quickly.
Two poles, setline, bait and spearfishing rules differ.
Utah Lake is wide, shallow and highly sensitive to wind
Utah Lake Authority describes the lake as roughly 150 square miles. Its water-level page says the average depth is about 9 feet when the lake is full.
Best practical Utah Lake species
White bass
Utah DWR has long highlighted Utah Lake as one of the state’s major white-bass fisheries.
Spring spawning schools concentrate around tributary mouths; small jigs and compact spinners are simple search tools.
Channel catfish
Excellent warm-season target from shore or boat. Harbor channels, river mouths and deeper depressions are practical starting areas.
Current PCB consumption advisory applies — see the health section below.
Walleye
Fish channel edges, moving-water areas and transition zones. Dawn, dusk and cloudy periods reduce the disadvantage of Utah Lake’s often turbid daylight conditions.
Largemouth & smallmouth bass
Focus on rock jetties, marina edges, reeds, hard-bottom transitions, riprap and other distinct structure.
Crappie & bluegill
Sheltered marinas, docks and protected structural areas give light-tackle anglers a manageable search zone.
Common carp
Extremely abundant and commonly visible in shallow water. Carp may be taken by several legal methods, including archery where otherwise lawful.
Utah Lake daily limits & handling rules
| Species | 2026 daily limit | What makes Utah Lake different |
|---|---|---|
| Largemouth + smallmouth bass | 6 combined | Only 1 may be over 12 inches. |
| Northern pike | No limit | Anglers must not release northern pike. Every northern pike caught must be immediately killed. |
| All suckers | 0 | Immediately release every sucker. |
| White bass | No limit | Statewide white-bass rule applies. |
| Channel catfish | 8 | Current Utah Lake PCB consumption advisory applies. |
| Walleye | 10 | Only 1 may be over 24 inches. Tributary spring rules are tighter. |
| Crappie | 50 combined | Black and white crappie count together. |
| Bluegill + green sunfish | 50 combined | Statewide limit. |
| Bullhead | 24 | Statewide limit. |
| Yellow perch | 50 | Dead yellow perch may legally be used as bait at Utah Lake. |
Pike and suckers require opposite actions
Catch → immediately kill
There is no daily pike limit on Utah Lake. Current 2026 rules prohibit releasing a northern pike alive.
Do not follow older Utah Lake advice about releasing tagged pike; the current rule requires every pike to be killed.
Catch → immediately release
All suckers caught in Utah Lake must be released. This simple rule protects native sucker species, including the threatened June sucker.
A fish that must be immediately released cannot legally be held in a livewell, container or on a stringer first.
The lake rule changes when you move into a Utah Lake tributary
Special tributary rules apply west of I-15, including American Fork Creek, Beer Creek, Dry Creek, Hobble Creek, Spanish Fork River, Spring Creek and Spring Run Creek.
Kill immediately.
Through 6 a.m. on the first Saturday of May.
Sunset–sunrise from first Saturday in May through 6 a.m. second Saturday of July.
Yes, you can fish two poles — and Utah Lake also allows setlines
Up to 2 fishing poles
Setline fishing
What can you legally put on the hook?
| Bait / practice | Utah Lake answer | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Chumming | PROHIBITED | Do not scatter bait or food into the water to attract fish. |
| Corn | LEGAL | Utah generally allows corn unless a water-specific rule prohibits it. |
| Live baitfish | GENERALLY UNLAWFUL | Live baitfish use is unlawful unless specifically authorized. |
| Dead white bass | LEGAL HERE | Dead white bass may be used as bait only in Utah Lake and the Jordan River. |
| Dead yellow perch | LEGAL HERE | Utah Lake is one of the specifically listed waters where dead yellow perch may be used as bait. |
| Live crayfish | Same-water use only | Live crayfish may be used only at the water where captured and may not be transported away alive. |
Utah Lake is open to underwater spearfishing — but not for every game fish
Some Utah Lake fishing changes discussed in 2026 are only proposed for 2027

Motorized launch: $8/day
Hours: 6 a.m.–10 p.m.
The same Saratoga Springs annual launch pass can be used at either city marina.
Lincoln Beach
Useful when your fishing plan centers on south-lake water rather than Provo or the northeast shoreline.
Verify current ramp depth and local conditions before towing because Utah Lake levels can materially alter shallow access.
Lindon Marina
Lindon normally provides a boat launch, protected marina and northeast Utah Lake access.
Do not treat it as a normal launch recommendation right now. The latest Utah County notice places Lindon Marina under a Danger HAB Advisory, and Utah’s Danger guidance says not to boat.
Reconsider only after the health advisory is officially downgraded or removed.
Check live lake elevation — not a saved percentage
Evaporation and Jordan River outflow gradually lower the lake.
Utah Lake Authority recommends contacting your intended marina for current depth.
When Utah Lake patterns generally become easier
White bass
DWR has specifically highlighted May–June tributary-mouth concentrations for spawning white bass.
Channel catfish
Walleye
Bass
A more efficient August fishing schedule
Try bass, walleye or roaming white bass before heat, wind and boat traffic build.
Shift toward harbor channels, deeper depressions, moving water or distinct shade/structure.
Transition toward channel catfish and low-light walleye.
Shorten the trip rather than forcing an open-water crossing in a kayak or small boat.
Catch-and-release gets harder when shallow water gets hot
- Fish mornings and evenings when possible during very hot weather.
- Avoid the warmest stagnant shallow coves for catch-and-release fishing.
- Wet your hands before touching fish.
- Keep the fish in the water while removing the hook whenever practical.
- Photograph quickly and release immediately.
- Do not “release” a northern pike. Utah Lake’s mandatory kill rule overrides ordinary catch-and-release advice.
2026 Utah aquatic-invasive-species checklist
Every motorized and nonmotorized boater must complete Utah’s annual mussel-aware boater course.
Annual AIS enrollment: $20 Utah resident vessel or $25 nonresident vessel.
Remove water, plants and debris before moving between waters.
Stop at operating inspection stations and follow decontamination instructions.
Dry-time guidance used by Utah State Parks
Slow to wakeless speed within 150 feet
Utah boat operators must operate at wakeless speed within 150 feet of several people and structures important to anglers.
Utah fishing license cost for a Utah Lake trip
Children under 12 may fish without a Utah fishing license. Anglers age 12 and older generally need the appropriate license. Standard licenses are valid for 365 days from purchase.
Short trips
DWR states that a 2.2% transaction fee applies to online and in-person credit/debit-card transactions.
HAB warning and fish-consumption advisory are not the same thing
Harmful algal bloom
A current recreational-water exposure issue.
- Can change quickly by location.
- Affects boating/swimming/contact decisions.
- Avoid visible scum.
- Clean fish and discard guts.
Channel-catfish PCB advisory
A fish-consumption issue.
- Applies to eating Utah Lake channel catfish.
- Not the same as a temporary HAB closure/advisory.
- PCB exposure cannot be solved simply by waiting for algae to disappear.
Current formal Utah Lake fish advisory: channel catfish
Utah DEQ’s current statewide advisory list identifies Utah Lake channel catfish for PCBs. The previous version of this article also listed common carp, but carp does not appear in the current Utah Lake row of DEQ’s live advisory table and has therefore been removed here.
| Group | Current Utah Lake channel-catfish guidance |
|---|---|
| Adults | Limit to 2 six-ounce servings per month. |
| Women & children ages 6–16 | Limit to 2 six-ounce servings per month. |
| Pregnant/nursing people & children under 6 | DO NOT EAT |
Utah Lake northern-pike survey footage
This third-party field video follows a northern-pike netting survey involving Utah DWR work at Utah Lake. It is useful context for understanding why the current fishing rule treats northern pike differently from ordinary catch-and-release game fish.
Video: “Northern Pike Netting Survey With The DWR At Utah Lake,” Wild About Fish, published April 14, 2025. The video is supplemental; current legal requirements come from the 2026 Utah DWR guidebook and administrative rule.
A simple three-hour Utah Lake trip
- Check HAB status. Do not use Lindon Marina while its Danger Advisory remains.
- Choose Utah Lake State Park, American Fork or Saratoga Springs based on the section of lake closest to you.
- Target white bass or channel catfish first. Both require less specialized searching than a dedicated walleye trip.
- Fish dawn or evening in hot weather.
- Carry the two opposite rules: pike = kill; sucker = immediately release.
- If keeping channel catfish, check the current PCB advisory.
Four practical Utah Lake setups

Utah Lake fishing questions answered
Is Utah Lake open for fishing in August 2026?
Fishing itself is not under a lake-wide closure, but Utah Lake is under a lake-wide harmful-algal-bloom Warning Advisory. Lindon Marina is under the higher Danger Advisory, where Utah guidance says not to boat and to use caution if fishing.
What are the best fish to catch in Utah Lake?
White bass and channel catfish are two of the simplest practical targets. Walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, bluegill, common carp and northern pike provide additional opportunities.
What is the bass limit on Utah Lake?
The 2026 special Utah Lake rule allows six largemouth or smallmouth bass in combination, and only one of those bass may be over 12 inches.
What should I do if I catch a northern pike?
Do not release it. Utah Lake has no northern-pike daily limit and current rules require every northern pike caught to be immediately killed.
What should I do if I catch a sucker?
Immediately release it. All suckers caught in Utah Lake must be released.
Can I use two fishing poles on Utah Lake?
Yes. Utah allows a licensed angler to use up to two fishing poles on waters open to fishing. Using two poles does not allow you to take more than one daily limit.
Can I use a setline on Utah Lake?
Yes. Utah Lake is one of Utah’s specifically authorized setline waters. You may use one setline with no more than eight hooks, but you need a setline permit in addition to a valid fishing or combination license. The line must be properly tagged and checked at least once every 48 hours.
Can I use white bass as bait in Utah Lake?
Dead white bass may be used as bait in Utah Lake. Dead yellow perch may also be used as bait there. Live baitfish are generally unlawful unless specifically authorized.
Is chumming legal at Utah Lake?
No. Utah’s current fishing rule prohibits chumming on waters unless a specific exception applies, and Utah Lake is not given a general chumming exception.
Are Utah Lake State Park ramps open?
Utah State Parks’ August 10, 2026 ramp update listed the Northwest, North Center, Northeast, South Marina and Provo River ramps open. The South Marina ramp is the shallowest. Conditions can change as lake elevation declines, so check again before towing.
Is Lindon Marina open for normal boating right now?
The latest Utah County health notice places Lindon Marina under a Danger HAB Advisory. Utah’s Danger guidance says not to boat. Use another access point until that advisory is removed or downgraded.
Can I eat channel catfish from Utah Lake?
Utah DEQ currently lists a PCB consumption advisory for Utah Lake channel catfish. The current table lists two six-ounce servings per month for adults and for women and children ages 6–16, while pregnant or nursing people and children under 6 are advised not to eat it.
Do carp currently have a Utah Lake fish-consumption advisory?
Carp were included in older Utah Lake advisory information, but the current Utah DEQ statewide advisory list displays Utah Lake channel catfish as the lake’s listed advisory species. Always use the live DEQ table for current guidance.
How old do you have to be to need a Utah fishing license?
A person under age 12 may fish without a Utah fishing license. Anglers age 12 and older generally need a valid Utah fishing or combination license.
How shallow is Utah Lake?
Utah Lake Authority says the average depth is about nine feet when the lake is full. Actual depth and marina usability change with lake elevation, which is why boaters should check live water levels before launching.
Check health, depth and method before choosing the fishing spot
Utah Lake rewards anglers who make decisions before they arrive. Start with the current HAB status, choose a species, launch close to the area you actually want to fish, check live water level and wind, then apply the correct bass, pike, sucker, bait or setline rule.
Regulations, access, boating requirements and health information reviewed . HAB status, water elevation and ramp access can change after publication.
